Last minute panic!

The plan this month was to make sure that I started my theme straight away. I had it all worked out, I was going to treat it like a school project...do my research early and plan out how I was going to present the information then I was going to sit down and start writing, maybe do a bit each day. This did not happen. Those of you that follow the blog know that I've been having a hard time lately...the past three months have dealt some pretty horrible blows but there's no way I'm using those as my excuse to have not done my theme as planned...the truth is I was lazy. Instead of using my free time to get stuck into my theme I was sneakily watching absolute rubbish on the television, Cupcake Wars, Bridezillas and my favourite The Real Housewives of New York City. These programmes were more appealing than sitting down and doing history research...I'm so ashamed. This after all was my theme, I chose it and I really wanted to do it. But here I am limping to the finish line with my theme only just completed and perhaps looking not quite as good as I had hoped. It's done, i've just printed it off and after a pretty rubbish week it really helped me to take my mind off things, I've actually learnt something and I'm thinking if only I could have done something like this at school I would have found History far more interesting. Tomorrow is our next dinner...we're off on our culinary travels again this time for Sunday lunch and I can't wait to escape reality (and the television) for a bit and be with my four fantastic friends.

We're having a spring clean!

We thought our blog was looking a bit dark and wintry so we've decided to have a spring clean and spruce it up a bit. You may see a few changes as we mess about with our posts but please give us your feedback and leave some comments to let us know what you think...be honest...we won't be offended.

The Theme for April

Travel Back In Time
I have been caught up in all of the historical events taking place...the anniversary of the Titanic, the findings of a well preserved Woolly Mammoth - history fascinates me.

This month we are going to do a bit of travelling - time travelling. I want you to discover our past. Travel back to a period that fascinates you and discover more about that time.

Whilst on your travels I want you to look up somebody from that period and find out more about them:

Who are they? What did they do? What impact did they have on society, their country or even the world?

Bring your findings back to the present day and present them in any way that you choose - pictures, drawings, writing an article perhaps.

Then look at the following:

How do you think you would have lived during this time?
Is there anybody today who is similar to the person that you met in the past?
What lessons can we learn from the person that you met?

Finally...

What would you bring back today from the past? Maybe this will spark some debate and discussion at our next meal.

March 's Dinner... in April

Yes so with all the goings on in our lives, both personal and work related, we couldn't really get it together and set a date for our Intellectual Dinner in March. This I have to say didn't really bother me, "more time to do my theme"  I said to myself. so I kicked back and forgot about doing any work on it until the deadline was suddenly upon me and I had done zilch, nothing, nada. In this situation I resort to serious procrastination, like cleaning the bathroom tiles with a toothbrush and some bleach or deciding it's really time to rearrange items in my fridge. So I was pleased when I got a call from Caroline that very afternoon, letting me know that she was up to similar distractions before completing her theme. Although Caroline had managed to do a full workout that morning, which put my careful tile cleaning into perspective. If you're going to procrastinate, then at least do something worthwhile!

We had a reservation at an Argentine restaurant called Argento Steakhouse situated in Huddersfield town centre. I had high hopes for this evening as the restaurant had been recommended to me by several friends. Also for the first time since October we were five again. Dannie was joining us! We arrived a bit early, so decided to sit by the bar for a drink until Amanda arrived. We ordered four lime and sodas and were surprised when they arrived and were glasses of soda water with a wedge of lime, this was quite refreshing though so we didn't mind.

Argento's is a traditional Argentinian restaurant serving all the cuts of beef you could want, cooked to your preference or served up on a volcanically hot stone so you can cook it yourself. There is also a choice of chicken and seafood for the non red meat eaters. The atmosphere was warm and inviting and the decor matched my idea of what a steakhouse should look like, complete with an impressive cowhide on the wall. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive and it was no problem for our waiter to stop and explain the different cuts of meat for us when we were choosing our order. Amanda, Caroline and myself went for an 8oz rump steak served with chips and a very tasty garlic and herb steak sauce. Catherine had the chicken with a mustard sauce which Dannie began happily pouring onto her steak before Catherine quietly commented, "ahem, that's mine Dannie." Apparently it goes well with steak too. My steak was tasty and cooked to medium rare perfection and the chips and onion rings went down well too. This was followed by a caramel flan dessert that came with a really embarrassing firework and a round of  Happy Birthday to dimmed lighting and my very red face...thanks ladies! But the flan was delicious and so were Dannie's caramel pancakes.

This month's theme was a tricky one, to first write a letter to your sixteen year old self and then to write a letter to your eighty year old self. It was interesting that the letter to our future selves proved the more difficult of the two to write. These are our letters. Some good advice here...

After reading our letters we all sat and pondered life, where we were now and where we wanted to be. Amanda had found the theme difficult to attempt and instead discussed how she was feeling...the month had been a hard one to get through and she felt that writing to her sixteen year old self would have been a bit of a depressing experience. We all agreed that it had been a difficult task, particularly writing to our eighty year old selves...it was hard to imagine ourselves at that age and what we wanted to say and then Danielle proudly reminded us that when she turned eighty Amanda would be a hundred. We thought that maybe Amanda would still be with us at a hundred...frowning at her telegram from the Queen (with pursed lips of course) because the Queen will still be here too...going on and on and keeping an ancient Charles away from the throne!

It was time to go home but not until I had unwrapped all of my birthday presents from the girls! We shouted for our bill and then gasped in amazement at the £1.50 charge for each of our soda waters...we could have bought an entire bottle of fizzy water and a whole lime for less. It had been an eventful month and for some of us it had been a particularly hard month...it was amazing that we had all managed to be here together, but we were and that's partly what The Intellectual Dinner Club is for, if somebody falls we will pick them up.

We dashed out into the freezing cold night and laughed at all of the girls spilling out of the taxis in nothing but tiny mini skirts and vest tops. Oh the memories! I was happy to be heading home with a stomach full of food to a nice glass of red wine and my blanket in front of the television!

I wonder where we will be heading to next?

The Theme for March

Dear Me,

If as an adult you could send a letter to your younger self, what words of guidance, comfort, advice or other message would you put in it?

In 2009 Joseph Galliano published a book of letters written by celebrities to their sixteen year old selves. The book was a success and was soon followed by a second publication in 2011 (Dear Me, More Letters to My Sixteen-Year-Old Self.) The books give an intimate glimpse into the backgrounds and emotional makeup of the contributors.

"Don't do drugs, stop hating your thighs, buy shares in Google."

This month you will write a letter to your sixteen year old self. Give any advice or guidance you like. Decide if you want to give warnings or be vague so as not to spoil the surprise of what is in store. It's up to you.

What about your future self then? Write a letter to the future you, aged 80 (we have already discussed what we will be like at that age!) This might be interesting to look back on when you are in your twilight years as a snapshot of your life now.

Bring your letters to the dinner in March.

The 1st March

What a glorious day. I couldn’t wait to hang my washing outside. It was the first time this year and I know that when I bring it inside it will hold a freshness only possible from a sunny spring day.

Every year I find myself in awe of the beauty and magic of Mother Nature as tiny splashes of colour begin to burst out of the dark earth. These are a couple from around my garden.

February – Long Live Tapas!

I can’t believe it is February already! The nights are already getting shorter and the crocuses and snowdrops are coming into bloom around Huddersfield. This February has supposedly been one of the warmest on record, but on a wet Friday evening, Huddersfield was doing its rain thing as the Intellectual Dinner Club made their way to Holmfirth for their around the world tour of cuisines – this time it was Spain’s turn as we visited Les Caveaux in Holmfirth.

Our journey to Holmfirth was not without incident. Holmfirth was kicking! Clearly others were looking for a good night out in Holmfirth and as a result the car parks were all full. In a tucked away car park we hit jackpot or so we thought. The car in front of us was doing very strange things indeed; choosing to try and park in a space that could have only been described as ‘cosy’ to say the least, changing their minds, performing an 87 point u-turn, then wanting the space we were patiently waiting for by blocking us in. Now if there is one thing I learned in February, it is never to annoy the normally serene Phoebe, especially when she is driving. By her own admission the ‘Red Mist’ descended and because these ladies were unwilling to move, sped off and frightened a poor taxi driver so much, he let us into the traffic, at risk of being mowed down by 4 angry witches!
Eventually after finding another space, we made our way to Les Caveaux in the centre of Holmfirth. Les Caveaux consists of an upstairs restaurant bar with gorgeous views across Holmfirth town centre or the more intimate cellar bar downstairs. We were to have our meal upstairs and were shown to our table. The dining area is lovely and welcoming with wood beams and stone walls strung with fairy lights. Our host was extremely welcoming and advised us to choose between 2 or 3 tapas dishes depending on how hungry we were.

The menu is broken down into vegetarian, meat, fish and warm salads. We were feeling very hungry and decided to try something from each of the menus. Once you have selected your dishes, you write your order on a pad and the waiter will come and collect the order. This felt very novel and added to the fun, sharing aspect of tapas dining.

Our orders came quickly and looked delicious! Each dish was presented beautifully in earthenware pots and spread all over the table so if you wish you could all have a taste of each dish. My personal favourite was Chorizo and Potatoes with Tomatoes and Paprika, which still has my mouth watering even now! Between us we managed the grilled haloumi, patatas bravas, baked Portobello mushrooms with spinach, pine nuts and goats cheese, battered squid, meatballs in rustic tomato and pernod sauce, braised ox cheek and wild boar and apple sausage as well as a seafood paella. Phew! It was lovely to be able to have a sample of each dish and I don’t think we could all agree on one favourite as they were all so tasty!

Following our early evening parking altercation, our conversation turned to all things automobile – do you leave your car in gear, our own road rage incidents (now that the red mist had fallen from Phoebe’s eyes) and the joys of motorway driving. But much more excitingly we were celebrating Cathy’s new job which she was due to start shortly!!! Cathy had been on an induction day and was telling us all about the aircraft hangar used to train students as well as the fake hospital complete with fake bodies!

And so to dessert! We all opted for a dessert except for Amanda who decided to have her usual liqueur coffee, (presented in the correct receptacle!). We all opted for the meringues with Chantilly cream and berries. Once we’d ordered the couple at the next table let us know they had loved their assiette of puddings (perfect if you can’t decide what to have) which included home-made lemon curd ice-cream. I was feeling very envious until my dessert came. The meringues were home-made and were delicious and light- the perfect end to a brilliant meal.

Our themes
This month our theme was to create a picture that told a thousand stories. I had deliberately chosen this theme as I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. I am not a natural artist to say the least. As usual, we had all left it to the last week to start the project and I think all of us were looking for inspiration up to the last minute!

Catherine brought with her a picture that she knew of her Uncle John’s home in Canada. She drew this whilst staying in Canada and said that the picture brought back sights and memories and like a flash she would be transported back to a happy memory. The picture was amazing!
Phoebe whilst looking for inspiration, decided to make a cake and knowing that she wanted to work with the manga style - ‘cake ninja ‘ was born! This was a terrifying figure in black armed with a wooden spoon and a cake. Phoebe then used photography to document a subject close to her heart – cake decorating! which charted the progress of a cake from start to finish.

In typical chic style Amanda, who is visiting Paris this year, decided to sketch the many outfits that she would be wearing against a backdrop of famous Parisian sites. Each outfit was elegant, stylishnd carefully chosen proving that Amanda can show the French a thing or two about fashion!

My inspiration came from war photography, which I am very interested in. Whilst scouring the internet I came across an image so moving and yet simple. The image is of a weeping marine taken during a Memorial Day parade. The picture makes me want to know his story, who he is, who is crying for and what happened. I recreated my own version of this picture, scaling it back to a simple black and white drawing. I cannot do the original photograph justice, but was OK with my efforts.
It was interesting that we had once again chosen our passions from family to cake-decorating, fashion to photography. This was a tough theme but I enjoyed it very much.

And so it came time to pay our bill and make our way (without incident!) back home. I’m looking forward to next month already.
